How to block distracting apps on iPhone
October 6, 2026
Your iPhone can block apps without downloading anything. Here are three built-in ways, what each one is good for, and how to make the block stick.
1. App Limits
Good for apps you want to use less, not never.
- Open Settings, then Screen Time, then App Limits.
- Tap Add Limit and pick the apps or categories.
- Set a time, like 15 minutes a day, and tap Add.
Once you hit the limit, the app locks for the rest of the day.
2. Downtime
Good for set hours, like study time or bedtime, when only the apps you need should work.
- Open Settings, then Screen Time, then Downtime.
- Turn it on and set a schedule.
- In Always Allowed, also in Screen Time, pick the apps you still need.
3. Focus modes
Good for cutting notifications. A Focus mode silences apps, but it doesn't stop you opening them. Set one up in Settings, then Focus.
Make the block stick
- Set a Screen Time passcode, ideally one someone else picks. Without it, "Ignore Limit" is one tap away.
- With the passcode on, turn on Block at End of Limit so the app really locks.
- Move distracting apps off your home screen. Out of sight helps more than you'd think.
Blocking only while you focus
App Limits and Downtime work on a daily total or a schedule. If you want apps locked only while you're actually working, Naru locks the apps you pick during a focus session and opens them up on your breaks.
